Internships at the OSRC

The Operating System Research Center offers internships for graduate (Diploma, Master's) and PhD students. It is also possible to write a Diploma or Master's thesis at the OSRC. Students can work on a variety of topics in all of our teams: Hypervisor team, OS Kernel team, and System Integration team.

Research topics

We offer students the opportunity to work on relevant, leading-edge research topics in the following areas:

AMD64 architecture extensions

  • Identify bottlenecks in today's system architectures
  • Design extensions for the AMD64 instruction-set architecture
  • Evaluate new extension ideas

Manycore computing

  • Improve transactional-memory and managed-language runtimes for manycore systems
  • Develop simulators for future manycore architectures

Transactional memory

  • Devise operating-system support for software transactional memory
  • Make use of transactional-memory techniques inside operating-system kernel

Performance analysis

  • Benchmark operating systems and hypervisors
  • Study the performance impact of architectural features

Power management

  • Develop operating-system mechanisms for balancing performance and power for optimal throughput
  • Design power-management strategies for hypervisors

Virtualization

  • Virtualize new CPU and platform features
  • Optimize hypervisors using the newest virtualization technology

Simulation

  • Develop simulators for future architectures

OS and architecture support for managed languages

  • Propose new operating-system interfaces that support managed-language runtimes
  • Propose architecture extensions for managed languages

Reliability – availability – serviceability

  • Enhance RAS support in operating systems and hypervisors

Work at the OSRC

You will be joining a young team that takes pride in the quality and relevance of its work. Despite being a relatively recent addition to AMD – the OSRC was founded in 2006 – we have established trust and an excellent working relationship with AMD's design and software organizations.

Students become AMD employees for the duration of their internship. AMD offers attractive compensation for interns and students working on their thesis.
